Restoring older images, 50 to 150 years old, is much more challenging and requires both greater expertise and a knowledge of how these historic images were created and actually appeared as originals.
This original image(circa 1890's) was actually a small photograph on a wallet sized glass plate that was then hand painted. The client's final image is an archival paper 5x7.
The great-great-grandfather remarried. Although the lady in the hat was his new wife, there were no photographs of the nuptial couple. We combined two image so now the family has an archival bridal portrait replicating what could have been.
From the early 1900's to around the 1950's, portrait photographers used light sensitive previews. These preiews would turn darker and darker, obliterating the image, as they were viewed and exposed to normal light (encouraging the purchase of a finished image). The image on the left was typical of one of those previews. On the right is our restoration recreated as the finished portrait would have looked.
Of course, we also restore more recent images, like this one from the 1960's. |
